As of late September, there have been no previews for New South Wales or Victoria, as their seasons have been delayed due to Pandemic restrictions.

Season Previews (Cricinfo)
Cricinfo offers 10 Season Preview articles covering various aspects of this season's competition. They are at the bottom of the list at the above link.

Note for neophytes to the game:

The Scorecard (Cricket's Box Score)

Batting figures: Number of Runs scored; Number of balls (deliveries) faced; Time batted (in minutes); Number of Fours (balls over the boundary rope on the bounce--analogous to a baseball Ground Rule Double), Number of Sixes (balls over the boundary rope on the fly--analogous to a baseball Home Run--add total runs scored by boundaries to get percentage of runs scored by boundaries); Strike Rate (number of runs/balls faced--expressed as %). The other runs are scored on each delivery (either no run--running is always an option in cricket) or how many times the two batters cross from one wicket to the other (each time they cross adds 1 run to the score--credited to the bats[wo]man).

Wides are balls too far away to be hit (like balls in baseball). No Balls are illegal deliveries (like balks in baseball). For Ws and NBs 1 run is conceded and the deliveries do not count as part of the over. In that sense, there is no limit to how long an over can take. Byes are runs conceded by the wicket keeper (analogous to passed balls or wild pitches). Leg byes are runs the batter scores without hitting the ball (balls off any part of the body but the bat or gloves are still "live" and can be scored on). NBs, Wides, Byes, and Leg Byes are added to the team score as "Extras" at the bottom of the scorecard. Byes and Leg Byes are counted as one ball in the over. Only NBs and Wides are tallied by the Bowler.

Bowling figures: Number of overs (6 balls per over); Number of maiden overs (overs in which no runs scored); Runs conceded; Wickets taken.
Economy is number of overs/runs conceded.  No Balls and Wides (see above).

Fall of wickets: Wicket Number (1-10); Score at Fall; Over delivery number; Player Out. This shows the sequence of the game, and the partnerships.

A team can "declare" its Innings closed at any time. This is done for strategic purposes. If a team is 150 or more runs behind after batting in the 1st Innings, the team ahead has the option of "inviting" the team behind to "follow on", that is, bat again. This is also done for strategic (or in some cases, psychological) purposes.

When the team batting 1st wins, the win is expressed in terms of Runs won by (cricket never tallies total scores). When the team batting last wins, the win is expressed in terms of wickets, i.e. how many wickets (outs) in hand the team had left when the winning run scored. A first class match ends in a draw if the team with more runs cannot dismiss the other team (i.e. record 10 outs) in its second innings. In this sense, a "lost" match can be saved by the team that is behind. It matters not how many runs they are behind, 10, 100, or 1,000, when the match ends.

The match begins with a coin toss. The team that wins the toss chooses whether to bat of bowl first. A single ball is used for a minimum of 80 overs (480 balls). After that, and each subsequent 80 overs, the bowling side can take a "new ball" at any time. The pitch (bowler to stumps and "base path") is covered at the end of play each day. It is never "dragged" as in baseball, but is rolled at the end of each Innings. The team coming to bat has the option of asking for a light (by hand) or heavy (mechanical) roller.

==================================

Note: For selected matches there is enough information in the commentaries to present a "Dropped Catch Report" For those reports the following caveats should be kept in mind.

It is unknown if these were "sitters" (easy catches--errors in baseball parlance) or "half-chances" (outs that would have been "great plays" which would never be scored as errors in baseball parlance). I simply noted where the commentary said "dropped catch". The position is the fielding position where the drop happened. It is not necessarily the fielding position when the ball was delivered. Cost is a term that is freighted and implies that the drop and drop alone cost the team the runs enumerated. That, of course, is not true. It is merely a basis for the beginning of a discussion of the importance of fielding, the "T Rex front legs" of cricket analysis. These numbers are in no way intended to diminish the achievements of the batters who were "dropped". They were presented with an opportunity (or opportunities), and in some cases cashed in on those opportunities.

Note: A Direct Partnership cost is the difference between the drop score and the end of that partnership score. An Indirect Partnership cost is the addition of all the later partnerships that the dropped batsman was involved in. It implies that another bats wo(man) or other bats(wo)men would have had to make up the difference had  the dropped bats wo(man) been caught.

MATCH 8--VICTORIA V NEW SOUTH WALES (NOVEMBER 5-8, 2021)

Notable:

For the second time in two weeks, Victoria played against New South Wales, as Interstate Pandemic restrictions prevented either side from playing outside its State. This time the match was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The result was similar to last week (Victoria following a 204 run win with a 174 run win). NSW attempted to save both matches: 134 in 94 overs last week
247 in 112.3 overs this week.

Victoria was in complete command this week, as opposed to last week, when NSW had was ahead after the 1st Innings. The save attempt this week was due to the magnificent effort of NSW Opener Daniel Hughes, who carried his bat in the to the tune of 89 not out in 311 balls, with 11 fours and a strike rate of 28.62. He helped take NSW all the way to the last 15 overs in a match they were hopelessly out of (the target was 422), and injury (though not serious) was added to insult when James Pattinson (right arm fast medium pace) fielded a defensive push and threw it at Hughes. The throw hit Hughes in the ankle and knocked him down. But it didn't stop him. Nor did it stop Pattinson from bowling a bouncer at Hughes the next delivery.

Hughes, by the way, was not dismissed by a bowler in the match, having been run out in the 1st Innings. He faced 451 balls.

MATCH 7--NEW SOUTH WALES V VICTORIA (OCTOBER 27-30, 2021)

The October 27-30 matches were the first time a complete schedule of 3 matches was contested simultaneously, as Interstate Pandemic restrictions have wreaked havoc with the fixture list. Cricket Australia presented a "Round Preview" for these matches

Notable:

This match was a great example of the importance of a dropped catch. A dropped catch can have tremendous influence on the outcome of a match.

In this match, the crucial Victoria 2nd Innings, which won the match, was heavily influenced by an opportunity afforded Marcus Harris by a dropped catch by New South Wales' Matt Gilkis at Gully. Harris was working on an excellent (though a bit slow) innings when he was dropped on 66 off 201 balls with the score 126/1. The second wicket (Harris) fell at 283, extending the partnership by 157 runs. Harris finished with 137 off 361 balls, improving his personal score by 71 runs. He also faced 160 more balls than he would have had Gilkis completed the catch. This is not to say that other Victorian batsmen could not have made up the difference. However, they didn't have to. Harris was able, with Captain Peter Handscomb, to grind out a 261 run 2nd wicket partnership that increased Victoria's 1st Innings lead of 48 runs (with the help of a 22 run 1st wicket partnership) to an effective score of 353/2. Had Harris been caught, the effective score would have been 196/2. And Victoria would have still been in a good position, but not nearly the dominant one they ended up in. If Gilkis had caught Harris, might the outcome have changed? No one can say for sure, but we do know the outcome was a big win for Victoria.

MATCH 6--QUEENSLAND V TASMANIA (OCTOBER 27-30, 2021)

Notable:

This match was instance where a dropped catch had a large influence on the outcome of a match.  of a dropped catch. A dropped catch can have tremendous influence on the outcome of a match. For Beau Webster, Captain of Tasmania, it was disastrous. For Marnus Labuschagne of Queensland it was an opportunity. And a good player makes the most of an opportunity. Labuschagne was at the crease for 176 more balls than he would have been had Webster taken the chance at 1st Slip. He scored 114 more runs than he would have. The partnership that was not broken added 138 more runs before it was broken. Labuschagne then participated in another partnership which added 74 more runs before he was finally dismissed. Of course those runs could have been made up by other batsmen, but there is a big difference between 65/2 and 202/2. Labuschagne's grit, determination, athletic ability, fitness, and intelligence made a large part of the difference between the two teams in this match. For more on this see the dropped catch report at the bottom of this entry.
