Note: Each home team's Youtube site is linked for those who might want to use this blog as a jumping off place to all live feeds. They link to the "videos" page. If you don't see the live feed there, just click on "home". All matches and all days begin at 11:00 am local time. This service is, of course also provided by ECB. However its links go to Web based pages, which can be ponderous for those with slower connections. The Youtube sites are much more bandwidth friendly in my opinion.

Note: For the full match video links, I have attempted to link you directly into the beginning of play (when the umpires come out if available). There are long periods of lead time on some of the videos. What I skip over, you may find interesting (such as final pitch preparation or pre-game practice). Its all there. Just use the slider bar.

Occasionally the video may be silent. Occasionally, there is sound feedback. Just locate where the sound is repaired, go back to where it went bad, and watch in silence.

Note: with this round, I will report dropped catches, wickets off no balls, missed stumpings, etc.  that are discussed in one or more of the match reports. Obviously that doesn't mean there weren't more dropped catches, or even that some of the reports might have been mistaken, but the context of the drops may be of interest.

I'm adding links to Cricinfo match reports that have bylines.

I will also be providing a link to the ball by ball commentary provided by Cricket Australia. It is the best commentary in the fewest words that I have seen. Lengths, where the ball is hit, type of shot, selected matches have the name of all players doing the fielding, dropped catches noted.

Notable: Round 4 was a great advert. for 1st class cricket. In four of the nine matches, the winning team was behind after the 1st Innings. In three of those they were behind by 98 (Lancashire) 99 (Somerset), and most amazing of all, 146 (Gloucestershire, who chased down 348 in 78.2 overs to win). But the most exciting match of this round was the chase that failed. Yorkshire held their nerve and kept out Leicestershire with 1 run to spare. A 1 run win was something which the two teams, with over 5,000 County Championship matches played, had done only once before, in 1976 (Yorkshire).

On the other side of the coin, there were some terrific beatings handed out, by Surrey (v Hampshire, the form team of the Group going into the match--an innings and 289 runs, Hampshire's biggest Innings defeat since 1911); by Durham (v undefeated Warwickshire--an innings and 127 runs); by Glamorgan (v Kent--10 wickets in Glamorgan's shortest game by overs since 1926); and by Nottinghamshire (v Derbyshire--310 runs).

The one "bore" draw (Worcestershire v Essex) was spiced by Sir Alastair Cook's first century of the season, but perhaps even more impressively, considering the abominable bowling conditions, by Essex' Sam Cook. He had bowling figures of 4 for 60 in 29 overs and 2 for 7 (including 1 for three in 18 balls) in 11. This in a match where only 20 wickets fell, each at a cost of 53 runs.

In Group 1, the six teams are separated by 14 points, the top three by 3. In Group 3 the Rose Counties have separated themselves from the rest of the pack by 25 points. In Group 2 Gloucestershire has come from behind twice to win and once, following on, to draw without setting a target. This allowed them to take a 14 point lead.

Batting:

Highest Scorer: Hashim Amla (Surrey) 215 not out in 367 balls, 8 hours, 11 minutes, 22 fours. Amla was the only 200 of the Round. It is the 5th 200+ score of the season so far.

Day 3: No byline

Worcestershire has spent four full days of their last 9 in the field. 40 Wickets have fallen at Worcestershire in 8 days.

DROPPED CATCHES; ETC.

Day 4: Essex dropped 2 catches, 1 in Worcestershire's first Innings and 1 in their second.

Riki Wessels dropped by Nick Browne (Short Mid Wicket--a "sharp chance") off Shane Snater in the 1st Innings on 28. He finished with 33.

Tom Fell dropped by Dan Lawrence (Backward Short Leg--a difficult catch falling backward) on 14 off Simon Harmer in the 2nd Innings. He finished with 35. The Worcestershire commentator said it dropped in front of Harmer, but I agree with the Worcestershire match report that said it was a drop. Judge for yourself (over 22.5).

Day 2: Worcestershire missed a stumping.

Ben Cox missed a stumping of Ryan ten Doeschoate (41) when he advanced down the pitch off Brett D'Oliveira. D'Oliveira dismissed ten Doeschoate next ball, LBW.

Day 1: Worcestershire dropped 4 catches (all four very difficult)

Nick Browne dropped by Darryl Mitchell (2nd slip) twice, on 8 off Dillon Pennington and 13 off Charlie Morris. He scored 75.

Tom Westley dropped by wicket keeper Ben Cox off Ed Bernard on 45 (a "sharp" chance). He is 75 not out.

Dan Lawrence dropped by Cox off Pennington on the last ball of the day on 29 (attempt at a leaping catch). He is 33 not out.

This was Hampshire's heaviest Innings defeat in the County Championship since an Innings and 296 runs defeat against Warwickshire in June of 1911 (Cricinfo archive).

DROPPED CATCHES, ETC.

Day 3: Surrey dropped two catches.

In this case the particulars are irrelevant (so irrelevant that the CI match report didn't even mention the batsmen), except to say that Roach actually took 10 wickets in his 8 wickets Innings. Jamie Overton "juggled a chance at 3rd Slip" and Ollie Pope dropped one "diving to his left in the gully." As  for the notion (mentioned by Vince in the interview above and corroborated by the CI Report) that the LBW decision against Liam Dawson was in error (going down), well, at worst it means that Roach actually took 9 instead of 10 for his 8 for. But who is counting?

Day 2: Hampshire dropped 1 catch.

Amla dropped by Joe Weatherley (Wide Slip--a diving very difficult catch--a half chance...or less) off Scott Currie on 184. He retired hurt (stiff neck) at the beginning of Day 3 on 215 not out in 367 balls, 8 hours and 11 minutes. He ended up in arrears to Hampshire's two Innings output: 271-215.

It was Cockbain's first century since 2014.

This was Gloucestershire's 4th highest ever run chase. They were aided by 80 extras, including 27 byes and 38 no balls (each no ball is penalized by 2 runs in the County Championship). Leicestershire had 44 extras in their total.

MATCH REPORTS

Yorkshire

Northamptonshire

Cricinfo
Day 1: Note this story said  "He (Fraine) was Kohler-Cadmore's opposite, made 11 in 66 balls, and was dropped at second slip on 1 by Rob Keogh, who had been juggling hand warmers, but who failed to juggle the catch." The match video showed no evidence of Fraine being dropped between 1 and 2. He may have been dropped after 2, but as he scored 11 in 66 balls  and 82 minutes, someone else will have to tease out exactly what score he was dropped on. Fraine, by the way, came into the side to rest English Captain Joe Root after scoring 180 something in a Yorkshire 2nd XI match (see Round 3 Post for more information on that).

Yorkshire have been a member of the County Championship all through the modern era (1890-present). They have played 3,134 County Championship  matches in that time. This was their second 1 run win. Their first came in 1976 against Middlesex. (Cricinfo Archive). This was Northamptonshire's first 1 run loss. They have been a member of the County Championship since 1905. This was their 2,293rd match. Northamptonshire barely missed breaking a 31 year  non-winning streak against Yorkshire at Leeds. In April 1990 Northamptonshire won by an innings and 50 runs (Cricinfo Archive) at Headingly.

DROPPED CATCHES, ETC.

Day 4: Yorkshire 2 dropped catches and had 2 missed run-outs in Leicesteshire's chase.

Gareth Berg dropped by wicket keeper Jonathan Tattersall ("diving across 1st Slip") on 4 off Duanne Olivier. He finished with 11.

Wayne Parnell dropped by Tom Kolher-Cadore (1st Slip--"a fast, neck-high chance") on 17 off Steven Patterson. He finished last out with 33. He was dismissed by Patterson. Berg was the 8th wicket to fall.

According to the CI match report, the Saif Zaid-Tom Taylor partnership for the 6th wicket (21 runs) could have been broken twice with Taylor run out by David Willey both times on "offside singles", but Willey missed both, including 5 overthrows on the first one. Taylor finished with 1, but the partnership was extended. In essence, Yorkshire actually had 14 wickets to get 10. And gave up 5 runs that wouldn't have been accrued. And still won.

Kent

Day 1: Highlight of the Day for Kent was the dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne, third highest ICC rated batter in the world by Kent's ageless wonder Darren Stevens, on the day before his 45th birthday. Stevens began his career in 1997. See the article at news.com.au. The dismissal is in the highlights above.

This was the shortest ever 4 Day match in Glamorgan's history. It was the second shortest (by 1 ball) in the the team's history (1921--). The shortest was an Innings and 24 run win over Somerset in 1926. (Cricinfo Archive.

DROPPED CATCHES, ETC.
The Kent match article said that Glamorgan's David Lloyd was dropped at slip after a rain break late in the day. It gave no other details. Lloyd ended the day 54 not out.
