National Cricket League (1st Class)--October 17-November 21, 2021

The Tournament can be followed at three sites:

Bdcrictime.com (links to table, fixtures, results, stats, teams, squads, and news)

Cricinfo (links to table fixtures, results, scorecards tables, stats, and match reports)

Cricket Archive  (links to table, fixtures, results, scorecards, and stats) (note: CA is a fee based subscriber site)

Bangladesh Cricket Board (via cricheros.in) covers the Tournament through the Match Center. Links to scores, scorecards, ball by ball commentaries, stats, graphics, etc. The site can only be reached through a framed site at BCB. Due to technical issues, I cannot link directly to cricheros.in, so you will have to navigate from the above address. Note that the scorecard links to a basic commentary, the only one I have been able to find for this competition.

This is a two tiered Tournament. Each tier contains 4 teams. The format is a double round robin in each Division. There has been promotion-relegation of one team in the past, but this did not occur after the 2020-21 season, played last March (Cricket Archive, I could find no coverage of the 2020-21 competition at Cricinfo).

4 Day matches, 90 overs minimum per day (2,160 legal deliveries, 24 hours of play)

The points system: (Daily Star [Dhaka], October 10, 2019)

Note for neophytes to the game:

The Scorecard (Cricket's Box Score)

Batting figures: Number of Runs scored; Number of balls (deliveries) faced; Time batted (in minutes); Number of Fours (balls over the boundary rope on the bounce--analogous to a baseball Ground Rule Double), Number of Sixes (balls over the boundary rope on the fly--analogous to a baseball Home Run (add total runs scored by boundaries to get percentage of runs scored by boundaries); Strike Rate (number of runs/balls faced--expressed as %).

The other runs are scored on each delivery (either no run--running is always an option in cricket) or how many times the two batters cross from one wicket to the other (each time they cross adds 1 run to the score--credited to the batsman).

Wides are balls to far away to be hit (like balls in baseball). No balls are illegal deliveries (like balks in baseball). For Ws and NBs 1 run is conceded and the deliveries do not count as part of the over. In that sense, there is no limit to how long an over can take. Byes are runs conceded by the wicket keeper (analogous to passed balls or wild pitches). Leg byes are runs the batter scores without hitting the ball (balls off any part of the body but the bat or gloves are still "live" and can be scored on). NBs, Wides, Byes, and Leg Byes are added to the team score as "Extras" at the bottom of the scorecard. They are counted as one ball in the over. Only NBs and Wides are tallied by the Bowler.

Bowling figures Number of overs (6 balls per over); Number of maiden overs (overs in which no runs scored); Runs conceded; Wickets taken.
Economy is number of overs/runs conceded. No Balls and Wides (see above).

Fall of wickets: Wicket Number (1-10); Score at Fall; Over delivery number; Player Out. This shows the sequence of the game, and the partnerships.

A team can "declare" its Innings closed at any time. This is done for strategic purposes. If a team is 150 or more runs behind after batting in the 1st Innings, the team ahead has the option of "inviting" the team behind to "follow on", that is, bat again. This is also done for strategic (or in some cases, psychological) purposes.

When the team batting 1st wins, the win is expressed in terms of Runs won by (cricket never tallies total scores). When the team batting second wins, the win is expressed in terms of wickets, i.e. how many wickets (outs) in hand the team had left when the winning run scored. A first class match ends in a draw if the team with more runs cannot dismiss the other team (i.e. record 10 outs) in its second innings. In this sense, a "lost" game can be saved by the team that is behind. It matters not how many runs they are behind, 300, or 1,000.

The match begins with a coin toss. The team that wins the toss chooses whether to bat of bowl first. A single ball is used for a minimum of 80 overs (480 balls). After that, and each subsequent 80 overs, the bowling side can take a "new ball" at any time. The pitch (bowler to stumps and "base path") is covered at the end of play each day. It is never "dragged" as in baseball, but is rolled at the end of each Innings. The team coming to bat has the option of asking for a light (by hand) or heavy (mechanical) roller.

Round 4 (November 7-10) (see match report links for all matches at the bottom of Round 4)

Notable:

For the first time, in Round 4, Tier 2 spinners took less than half the bowlers'  wickets. Overall, spinners took the lowest percentage of wickets so far: 73 of the 132 known bowlers' wickets (there were 2 run outs and one bowler with no sourced style information) in Round 4 matches.

For the first 4 rounds here are the figures.

Key: All wickets taken by bowlers, wickets taken by spinners.

Total......................Tier 1.............Tier 2

Total: 522...341(65.3%)    293...188(64.2%)   229...153(66.8%)

Tier 1

The two best matches of the season were contested in this Round, one a 3 run victory (tied for the smallest margin of victory in Bangladesh 1st class history), and the other a tense run chase that ended in a 3 wicket win. The winners (Dhaka over Sylhet and  Rangpur over Khulna) moved the former into 1st Place by less than 3 points over the latter. The two meet at Sylhet Stadium in Round 5 in a match that could decide the Championship. They drew at Sylhet in Round 2. Dhaka earned .85 of it's overall 2.83 point lead in that match.

Dhaka defended 102 in the 4th innings, led by Nazmul Islam's (slow left arm orthodox [finger] spin) 4 wickets (including the final wicket) and a run out. For Sylhet, recent returnee from the 2021 T20 World Cup Nasum Ahmed (SLA) had a terrific match:

57.3-16-115-12

the highest match wicket output of the season so far, and only the 3rd 10 wicket match.

In the other match Rangpur, chasing 248, was in trouble at 205/7, but the 8th wicket unbroken 72 minute partnership between Akbar Ali and Surawadi Shuvo got them across the line.

Video of the 7th wicket followed by the match winning partnership

Tier 2

Chittagong (Chattogram) opened up an almost 10 point lead on Barisal at the top of the Tier 2 Table. The top of the Tier 2 Table gets promoted to Tier 1. Barisal went into the match in 1st Place with a one point lead over Chittagong but were not only defeated by an innings inside 3 days, but shut out of any League points. The winners were led by match award winner Mahmadul Hassan (a member of Bangladesh's Under 19 2020 World Cup Champions), who was part of 3 consecutive partnerships that accounted for 280 of his team's 443 runs in response to Barisal's 236. He finished with 121, his second consecutive Hundred in this competition.

After having been ground down for 8 hours and 38 minutes in the field, Barisal had nothing left and succumbed in 3 hours and 12 minutes, with no batsman scoring more than 25 and three batsmen shut out. 5 Chittagong bowlers shared the honors.

The other match was a draw between Dhaka Metropolis and Rajshahi that was interesting in that more runs were scored in each innings (232, 398, 433). The two teams now have 7 draws and 1 loss between them.

These two matches will be repeated in Round 5.

Another member of Bangladesh's 2020 Under 19 World Cup Champions, Tanzid Hasan (Rajshahi), achieved his maiden 1st class century, 145 in 171 balls, 267 minutes, 16 fours and 2 sixes. He was also involved in the biggest partnership of the Round and 3rd biggest of the competition, 162 with Junaid Siddique in Rajshahi's 2nd innings.

==================================

Round 3 (October 31-November 3) (see match report links for all matches at the bottom of Round 3)

Notable:

Round 3 continued the domination by the spinners, just as the first 2 rounds did. Of the 118 bowlers' wickets (there were no run outs), 81 were by spinners (68.6%). In Tier 1 47 of 64 wickets were take by spinners (73.4%). In Tier 2 34 of 54 wickets were taken by spinners (63%).  As the table below shows, there is a higher percentage in Tier 2 than in Tier 1 as a season trend.  However, this round was the first to have a higher percent taken in Tier 1.

For the first 3 rounds here are the figures

Key: All wickets taken by bowlers, wickets taken by spinners.

Total......................Tier 1.............Tier 2

R 1:   143...97(67.8%)     87...59(67.8%)     56...38(67.9%)
R 2:   129...90(69.8%)     66...33(50.0%)     63...57(90.5%)
R 3:   118...81(68.6%)     64...47(73.4%)     54...34(63.0%)
----------------------     --------------    ---------------
Total: 390...268(68.7%)   217...139(60.1%)   173...129(74.6%)

Tier 1:

The concept of "blocking out a draw" to save a match the losing team was hopelessly out of was demonstrated almost well enough to succeed by Dhaka, who came into this match at the top of the Tier 1 table. Khulna Captain Mitun Ali (called Mohammed Mithun by CI) correctly called the toss and perceptively chose to bat. His team then ground Dhaka to dust for 141.3 overs and 9 hours and 57 minutes, putting 419 runs on the board while only adding .15 batting points. They dismissed Dhaka for 231 and then enforced the follow on. Dhaka then did their best to save the game, as personified by tail enders Nazmul Islam (4-76-73-0-0--1.3) and Anamul Haque (5-56-61-1-0--8.9). 9 runs and over an hour at the crease for each player ground out 19.5 overs.  Dhaka was at one point 146/5 but spent the next 29.5 overs blocking to finish at 161. They came within about 20 minutes of finishing the job. So a huge Innings loss was nearly saved.

In the other match Rangpur won their first match by restricting Sylhet to 113 in the 1st Innings. Mukidul Islam (right arm medium fast pace--CA; right arm medium pace--CI) and Suhrawadi Shuvo (slow left arm orthodox off [finger] spin) cut the heart out of the Sylhet Innings by reducing them from 75/3 to 101/8. Sylhet never recovered, and though their 292 in the 2nd Innings gave their bowlers something to work with (which they did for a while, reducing Rangpur to 69/3), Naeem Islam  then partnered the next two wickets, ending up unbeaten on 50 (not out)-80-116-5-0, to finish the proceedings.

Tier 2

Both matches were long (23 hours 36 minutes and 23 hours 40 minutes) draws in which 2 and 2 and a half  Innings were played. There were four hundreds and 15 fifties, but no one had the bowling resources to force a win. However, it should be noted that Taijal Islam of Rajshahi (slow left arm orthodox off [finger] spin) was able to pry out 10 wickets (81-19-220-10), while Barisal's Monir Hossain (SLA) was able to take 5 in an the only Rajshahi Innings (32-6-107-5). Their yield was three quarters of the wickets taken in the match.

Round 2 (October 24-27)

Notable (Note: Player names are taken from Cricket Archive scorecards)

Round 2 was dominated by the spinners, just as Round 1 was. Of the 129 bowlers' wickets (non-run outs), 90 were by spinners (69.8%). In Tier 1 33 of 66 wickets were take by spinners (50%). In Tier 2 57 of 63 wickets were taken by spinners (90.5%).  As the table below shows, there is a higher percentage in Tier 2 than in Tier 1.

For the first 2 rounds here are the figures

Key: All wickets taken by bowlers, wickets taken by spinners.

Total......................Tier 1.............Tier 2

R 1:   143...97(67.8%)     87...59(67.8%)     56...38(67.9%)
R 2:   129...90(69.8%)     66...33(50.0%)     63...57(90.5%)
----------   ---------    ---------------    ---------------
Total: 272...187(68.7%)   153...92(60.1%)    119...95(79.8%)

Two Hat Tricks (wickets on 3 consecutive deliveries by the same bowler) were achieved in this Round, both in Tier 2 matches. (See below for details). A Hat Trick is one of cricket's rarest achievements.

Hat trick #1: Mohammed Ashraful (Barisal v Chittagong): video link
Hat trick #2: Sharifulla (Dhaka Metropolis v Rajshahi): video link

Tier 1

Table toppers Dhaka drew with Rangpur, maintaining their lead with 13.13 total League points. They scored the highest total in the competition so far, with 394 in 127.5 overs and 9 hours in their 1st Innings. They were led by centurions Abdul Mazid
(110-188-225-10-3--58.51), who won the match award, and Captain
Saif Hasan (107-195-290-8-2--54.87). They participated in four partnerships (including a 118 run 2nd wicket partnership together) that helped put the first 300 Dhaka runs on the board. From that point on, Dhaka was always in the front seat, but an excellent response of 321 in 116.5 overs by Rangpur made sure it wasn't the driving seat. The draw kept Dhaka in 1st and Rangpur in 3rd in Tier 1, but the small amount of League points they gained belied how well they batted. And an indication of how important a win vis a vis a draw is in this competition. Ariful Haque top scored for Rangpur: 98-118-196-5-4--83.05.

In the other match, Sylhet won by 4 wickets over Khulna. They limited the losers' 2nd Innings total to a lead of 202 and then got that total before lunch on Day 4. There was only one 50 in a match dominated by the bowlers, led by Sylhet's Rejaur Rahman (right arm medium pace), who won the match award with a stellar performance in Khulna's second Innings, taking half the wickets (12.5-3-51-5). The hero of the chase was wicket keeper Jaker Ali, who anchored the final day push and ground down the Khulna attack (40-127-206-1-1--31.49), only to be the last of his team dismissed. He might not have finished the job, but he certainly did a job. The win reversed the positions of the 2 sides in the table, Sylhet moving from 4th to 2nd. Khulna replaced them in 4th.

Tier 2

Barisal defeated Chittagong in a match that finished in less than two days (174 overs). The match featured a Hat Trick  (3 wickets on consecutive deliveries) by Barisal's ageless Mohammad Ashraful (slow right arm off break [finger spin]  and leg break [wrist spin]), which accounted for the first 3 Chittagong wickets in their 1st Innings. After Barisal scored 146, the hat trick reduced Chittagong to 21/3 and set the tone for the low scoring victory. The high score and only 50 in the match was Rafsan al Mahamud's 60 (60-142-(time forthcoming)-6-0--42.25) in Barisal's 1st Innings. A 100 run 6th wicket partnership between Rafsan (batting 5th) and Moin Khan (7th) was decisive. The 2nd highest partnership in the match was 39 runs.

For Baisal, Ashraful (13.2-2-53-5--3.92) and match award winner Monir Hossain (slow left arm orthodox off break [finger] spin) (9-5-15-5--1.66) split all the 1st Innings wickets. Hasan Murad (slow left arm orthodox) had a "five fer" for the losers in Barisal's 1st innings (18.3-11-26-5--1.40)  Nayeem Hasan (slow right arm off break [finger] spin) also had a "five fer" for  in Barisal's 2nd innings (16-4-74-5--4.62). Both of the Chittagoong bowers had 9 wickets for the match. Of the 39 bowlers' wickets (there was one run out) ,36 were taken by slow spin bowlers.

Finally, the the draw between Rajshahi and Dhaka Metropolis was highlighted by the 2nd Hat Trick of the Round. Dhaka Metropolis' Sharifulla (slow right arm off break [finger] spin), winner of the match award for his bowling (7 wickets overall and 23.5-5-70-5 in the 1st Innings, as well as his 59-86-105-5-2--68.60 with the bat), took his Hat Trick a little less spectacularly than Ashraful did for Barisal. Sharafulla's  accounted for the last 3 wickets of Rajshahi's 1st innings. Still, it was a marvelous accomplishment. Nazmal Hossain Shanto top scored and was the only match centurion with a Captain's knock of 103 (not out)-199-275-8-1--51.75) for Rajshahi in their 2nd Innings.

Cricinfo: Round 2 summary, by Mohammed Isam
Daily Star (Dhaka) Round 2 Match Reports

=================================

Round 1 (October 17-20)

As expected, slow bowlers dominated wickets taken in the first week. Of the 143 non-run out wickets, 97 (67.8%) were taken by slow bowlers. In Tier 1 slow bowlers took 59 of the 87 wickets (67.8%). In Tier 2 they took 38 of the 56 wickets (67.9%).

Tier 1

The 23rd National Cricket League began with title holders Dhaka winning easily, within 3 days over Sylhet. The match was pretty much decided when Dhaka bowled out Sylhet for 67 in 22 overs in their first Innings. Nazmul Islam (slow left arm orthodox--off break spin) took 6 wickets in the 1st Innings (8-1-23-6) and 4 in the second (21.4-8-44-4). His was the first 10 wicket match of the competition. The man of the match was Shuvagata Hom (slow right arm off break spin) for his 1st Innings 50 (50-69-106-1-0-72.46) and 6 match wickets (30-7-80-6). Sylhet's  Amite Hasan top scored for the match with his 76 (76-209-258-1-0-36.36).

In the other match, Khulna and Rangpur drew in a match where only 3 innings were played. Rangpur's Mehedi Hasan (slow right arm off break spin) won the match award for his 6 wicket 2nd Innings "haul" (41.1-13-90-6) and 9 wicket match haul (72.1-17-173-9). Suhrawadi Shuvo (slow left arm orthodox--off break spin) of Khulna also took 6 wickets (35.3-7-87-6). Jahid Javed of Rangpur had the only 100 in the match (101-185-281-10-2-54.59) in Rangpur's 2nd Innings.

Tier 2

Chittagong scored the most points of any team in the first round (10.49), and was the only team to score over 300 runs in their 1st Innings. Their win over Rajshahi was highlighted by Match Award winner Yasir Ali's 129 (129-198-237-15-3-65.15), which spearheaded their 1st Innings. Sanjamul Islam (slow left arm orthodox--off break spin) had a notable match in defeat, with a 5 wicket haul in Chittagong's 1st Innings (29-5-99-5) and a 9 wicket match haul (41.1-6-141-9).

The match between Barisal and Dhaka Metropolis was a rain marred draw in which there was play on only the 1st and 3rd day. But that was still enough time for Sharifulla (slow right arm off break spin) to win the Match Award with 59 (59-101-144-7-0-58.42) and take 5 wickets (23-10-34-5). Shadman Islam* had the match top score with 75 (75-145-201-7-1-51.72).
