Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy, 2021
This is an 8 team regional 50 over competition. The form is a single Round Robin, followed by playoffs. The 3rd place side will play the 2nd place side. The winner will play the first place side in a final. The competition will take place from May 29 to June 12, and then from September 12-25. Most, but not all matches will take place on Saturdays.
Playing Conditions (ECB, .pdf format, 29p.)
Points system: Win: 4 points, Tie: 2 points, No result or abandoned: 2 points, Bonus Points: 1 (winning team's run rate is greater than 1.25 times the loser's).
Standings are based on points accrued. Ties in the standings will be broken by (in order): highest net run rate, most points in the match between the tied teams, better bowling strike rate, drawing lots.

177--3rd Wicket--Emma Lamb-Piepa Cleary (Northwest Thunder v Western Storm, May 29)
June 12: 97--2nd Wicket: Georgia Adams and Maia Bouchier (Southern Vipers v Western STom)
Southern Vipers responded very well to their first loss with a Bonus point win over Western Storm. In the meantime, Central Sparks, who ended Vipers streak last week, stumbled v 6th place Northwest Thunder. After being dismissed for only 125 in less than 40 overs last week, Thunder topped 200 to send Sparks (203 in 49.5 overs) packing. Sparks won the toss, batted and were very soon 17/3. But Captain and Opener Eve Jones, with the help of Stephanie Butler (62 runs for the 4th wicket) and Izzie Wong (55 runs for the 7th wicket), dragged her team back into the game. There was some talk about Jones perhaps batting too circumspectly early in her Innings, but she ended up with a strike rate of 66.67 after accelerating with Wong. Emma Lamb and Georgie Boyce came crashing out with an opening 73 run partnership to start Thunder's Innings, but a middle order collapse (2/81 to 5/97) put them on the back foot. Then the two Lauras (Jackson and Marshall) put together a 39 run partnership in 8 overs that enabled Thunder to get over the line. The match was spiced by a controversy over the condition of the pitch, which was effected by a 4 day men's game previous to this one. (See the match article below).
Meanwhile,Vipers made a mockery of Storm's meager 177 total, with Georgia Adams and Maia Bouchier partnering for 97 runs in 20.2 overs (the largest partnership of the round), to canter home with an easy win. And the Bonus point they earned put them one point ahead of Sparks at the top of the table.
The 50 over regional action now brakes until early September with Vipers leading Northern Diamonds and Sparks by one point for the top three post season playoff places. Lightning, Southeast Stars, and Thunder are all within hailing distance (one Bonus point win) of the top 3. It should make for a very interesting finish.

Going into this week, Southern Vipers had an undefeated 9 match winning streak in this competition over the last two seasons. On Saturday they faced Central Sparks, the second consecutive week they played an undefeated team. On this occasion their winning streak came to an end as Sparks dominated with bat and ball, thrashing Vipers and earning a bonus point. A 71 run partnership for the 4th wicket between Captain Evelyn Jones and Gwenan Davies formed the backbone of a solid but not invincible 224 run Innings. Then the Sparks bowlers took over. Emily Arlott destroyed Vipers' Innings in a single over, the 7th, when she took 4 wickets, including a hat trick, reducing Vipers from 16/1 to 17/5. There was no way back from there, and only Dani Wyatt's 61 dragged Vipers past double figures. No one else scored more than 14. Izzie Wong added 3 wickets to complete the demolition.
On the other side of the coin, Sunrisers carried an 8 match losing streak over the last two seasons into their match with Northern Diamonds. The streak increased to 9 as they were bowled out for 53 inside 30 overs. Then Northern Diamonds reached the target in less than 8 overs, assisted over the line by 18 wides.
